10 Things Wedding Couples Forget to Ask Their Wedding DJ
1: "HOW MANY WEDDINGS HAVE YOU WORKED?"
It's probably safe to say that you don't want a DJ that has never worked a wedding before. We suggest you ask this question early on!
2: "HOW BROAD IS YOUR MUSIC SELECTION?"
Your guests are most likely going to be made up of ALL age groups, with many different music tastes and likes, so you can't just have one type of music playing throughout the whole day/evening,
Be sure to pick a DJ that has a broad range of music. Even better if you can send the DJ YOUR playlist (or even a selection of say, 20-30 songs you want to be played specifically)
3: "WHAT ARE THE TOTAL COSTS & FEES?"
It’s important to ask about the total cost (or extra fees) beyond the initial proposal. Some DJ’s may charge to play music during the dinner hour, or in-between speeches. Also some DJ’s may charge per hour after your pre-negotiated time is up. Some DJ’s will charge extra for lighting, or even if they have to carry their equipment up stairs (if lifts aren’t available)
4: "WILL YOU PLAY DURING COCKTAIL HOUR?"
Find out if the DJ will supply music during the cocktail hour. Guests won’t be dancing, but it could be nice to have some background music while they mingle.
5: "WILL YOU INTRODUCE SPECIAL DANCES?"
Of course, your FIRST dance as a married couple should always be announced, as you will want to make sure all your family and friends are all there to share the magical moment with you, but there are other ‘special moments’ during a wedding party - such as the Bouquet toss, perhaps a father/daughter dance, or very often, the opening of the buffet, cutting of the cake, and last orders at the bar (our saddest announcement we make!) Be sure to check with your wedding DJ that they are able to make the announcements that YOU want, and let them tell you how they take control of the room during these times.
6: "HOW MANY BREAKS WILL YOU TAKE?"
If you are booking a DJ all afternoon and evening, the likeliness is, they will need a break (Dont’t forget you also may need to feed them!) Talk to them before your event, to discuss what breaks they will need, and how long for.
7: "HOW IS THE FINAL PAYMENT COLLECTED?"
So you’ve paid the deposit to confirm your wedding DJ… and all of a sudden, the months have flown by, and your wedding is just a few weeks away! (how exciting!) You will need to ask when the remaining balance is due, and also HOW the payment is to be made (Bank transfer, credit/debit card or cash etc) This is definitely something you will want to find out before you enter into a contract (which is usually once you’ve paid the initial deposit)
8: "DO YOU INCLUDE LIGHTING?"
Don’t assume that your DJ will include lighting with their price packages.
Some DJ’s add it on as an ‘extra’ or hire it out from a third party, and charge YOU for it. Be sure to ask about this beforehand. Here at Boutiqo, all our prices include a full DJ set up (lighting and sound included)
9: "IS THERE AN EXTRA CHARGE FOR STEPS?"
Some DJ’s might charge more, if they have to lug their equipment up flights of stairs. If your venue does not have an elevator, you are best mentioning this to the DJ’s you are getting quotes from, as early as possible.
10: "HOW WILL YOU HANDLE SONG REQUESTS FROM GUESTS?"
Is this something that your DJ is happy to accommodate? You want to be sure that whoever you choose as your musical partner for your wedding is comfortable telling a guest that they aren’t able to play something. Ask your DJ or band how they handle song requests, especially ones that are on your “Do not Play” list.
